5.0 out of 5 stars The "Original" Design; also the Lightest Speedhub Option..., August 21, 2011

I won't repeat everything I wrote in my reviews for the disc-compatible quick-release/QR (the go-to option for most installations) and bolt-on/touring axle Speedhubs, so here I want to cover a few particulars to this hub, and talk a little about weight. For the record, over the past 10 years I've owned 3 of the 4 basic configurations of Speedhub (the fourth being bolt-on/non-disc).

This variant is more-or-less the "original" version of the Speedhub as it was introduced in 1998, intended to work with v-brakes and cantilevers.

The two biggest complaints about the Speedhub are the cost and the mass. It is true that the Speedhub will add some weight to your bike/trike, but the extra weight represents a fraction of the total system weight (the bike/trike and the rider). Additionally, the cost will lighten purse and offset some of those extra grams (well, the extra 500 or so grams). Nevertheless, the Speedhub is worth every penny and every gram.

The Speedhub offers numerous advantages of a tradition drive train:
1) Indexing in the hub.
Grit and grim, etc. doesn't affect the shifting. While it is true that a perfectly tuned derailleur system has a snappier feel, keeping the system well tuned takes time and I appreciate that I no longer spend several hours each month cleaning and adjusting cables to keep a derailleur working nicely.
2) Cabling is easy.
Run the cables, adjust the cable tension with the two knurled adjusters at the shiftbox and you are done. Since the indexing is in... Read more
