5 of 5 people found the following review helpful Great product for the cost, September 12, 2010 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Shimano 105 Rear Derailleur (Short Cage) (Sports) While I respect the expertise of the local bike store, the cost of this thing alone (especially factoring in that some bike stores would charge NEARLY as much as the part itself to install) is enough to warrant installing it yourself. Beyond the affordability, it's really quite simple to install. After removing the old derailleur; you're left with using a hex wrench/allen wrench to mount it to the derailleur hanger, attach the cable with minimal tension with said wrench, and then fine tuning with a phillips screw driver. The screws are even labeled ease of adjustment.
Even though the description suggests this is for a 10 speed system, it's truly interchangeable on drive-trains of other speeds. I installed this on a 9 speed system and it's still ridiculously smooth.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful Easy to install and smooth shifting on 8 speed drivetrain, September 1, 2010 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Shimano 105 Rear Derailleur (Short Cage) (Sports) Purchased derailleur to replace a 15 year old Shimano 600(Ultegra)that had failed. I visited local bike stores to learn what retail cost of component and installation would be. To replace with new Ultegra would have been in the $140-$150 range with the Shimano 105 option costing $110-$120.
Given that the bike is 15 years old, 105 was very adequete and price on amazon was lowest and of course it shipped for free. Installation was an absolute breeze. I am a novice mechanic and the instructions for installation were easy to follow and the whole process took less than 30 minutes.
Aside from a bike stand, the only tools required are a 5mm allen wrench and a phillips screwdriver.
One note of interest. While the description states it is a 10 speed component, rear derailleurs, in most instances, are not restricted to the number of gears on your freewheel. I installed the derallieur onto an 8 speed drivetrain and STI shifting system and it works perfectly. I am... Read more
